In all honesty, I do not think the government is going to repeal 377A. When I signed the open letter the prime minister, urging the repeal, I did not do so, believing that.
I signed the open letter because I want to make clear that I will not stand by this law, whether it is repealed or not, and that I will not stand by bigotry.
I signed it so that I have an unequivocal right to speak out in public, in class, at work, against anyone who makes a homophobic joke, uses the word "faggot" or tells me or any one of my friends, colleagues, students or loved ones that we are sinners/criminals for being gay or supporting gay rights.
I signed it because I refuse to be in a compromising position that consists of me feeling like a hypocrite the next time I defend myself or someone I love.
The government claims that S377A will not be enforced and that it is simply there for symbolic purposes.
Well guess what symbols are for? How much of homophobia is given its rights by the law?
We are all responsible for S377A whether we like it or not. And I signed the open letter because I do not want to be someone who contributes to discrimination.
I urge everyone who has not signed, to do so now. The letter closes today, Sunday, 21st October.
